Kathmandu Valley says “No Thank You” to Plastic Bags

KATHMANDU, APR 16 – https://www.facebook.com/prohimalayaThe government has started monitoring the implementation of the ban on use of polythene bags in the Kathmandu Valley. The government had decided the ban of the polythene bags from the Nepali New Year (April 14).

In this connection, a joint team of the Department of Environment, Nepal Police, Kathmandu Metropolis and Lalitpur Sub-Metropolis carried out a monitoring at Asan and Kalimati of Kathmandu and Krishna Mandir area of Lalitpur.
The team seized 300 kg of polythene bags from Asan, while 25 kg from Kalimati and 10 kg from Krishna Mandir area in course of monitoring, according to the Department.

The polythene bags were seized from Thanapati Trader of Lalitpur, Adhikari Plastic Suppliers and Regmi Plastic Suppliers at Kalimati, and Rakki Plastic Suppliers at Asan, among others.

Deputy Director General at the Department, Rup Narayan Bhattarai, said proprietors of the suppliers would be called at the Department on April 22 and 23 and they would be charged from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 as fine.

Monitoring as well as public awareness programme would be conducted side by side till the first week of May in this regard.Environment Division Chief at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Mahendraman Gurung, said that priority was on the public awareness to prevent general people from facing action.https://www.facebook.com/prohimalaya
